Massage
Massage is a generic term for a variety of techniques that involve touching, pressing, kneading, and manipulation of
the soft tissues of the body for therapeutic purposes.
It is one of the oldest forms of healing with evidence
of its practise in the Far East dating back 5000 years, and it is still found in many cultures as a traditional
form of treatment
Why "Therapeutic"?
There are a number of types of massage, for example Swedish,
Thai, Ayurvedic, remedial, and sports massage. The precise method depends on the culture from which the technique originated, and the philosophy on which it is based. Individual practitioners
are likely to have developed a particular style, based on their skills, interest, philosophy and experience with different
client groups.
My background as a Therapist has been mainly working in the community. From the beginning, I have been treating people
with serious issues- both physical and emotional- that required a completely different approach. I developed my style
of massage through my experience with such people, my experience as a Reiki practitioner and through my knowledge of the concepts
of Chinese Medicine.
I see and use massage as a therapeutic tool to relief energetic blockages manifested in the muscles and superficial
tissues of the body.
In the context
of my Hospice work, therapeutic massage has a different meaning. Here, touch is an independent channel of communication and this means that the manipulation
of tissues can become irrelevant in some cases but the person may benefit from the touch only.
In addition, therapeutic massage can satisfy the need for caring, nurturing touch that is less and less common in Western
societies and is especially relevant in the context of a large city.
